NOAA Awarded U.S. Patent for Innovative Lionfish Trap

Device could help protect threatened ecosystems and aid fishing communities

Over the last 20 years, invasive lionfish populations have dramatically increased throughout the western Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. Lionfish have already caused a decline in native species that have significant ecological, cultural, and commercial value. Further impacts on coral reefs and other important ecosystems are anticipated, but not yet fully understood. Fortunately, as the threat of lionfish has intensified, so too have the levels of awareness and concern among not just scientists and fishers, but among members of the public. NOAA’s recently-patented lionfish trap could be a solution that offers both ecological and commercial benefits. The trap is shaped like a change purse and is constructed primarily out of a hinged steel frame, attached netting, and a centrally-located vertical panel called a “fish attraction device”.

Grant research topic areas included Aquaculture, Recreational and Commercial Fisheries, Weather Service Improvement and Evolution, Flood Inundation, Next-Generation Observation and Modelling Systems, and Next-Generation NOAA Platforms.

ONav and GeoPixel™: Web-Based Navigation for the Collection of Aerial Imagery (U.S. Patent Pending)

NOAA engineers have created a heads-up navigation display for pilots for coastal imagery acquisition, “ONav.”  The system combines a real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) stream along with image collection metadata from the on-board cameras to generate vector overlays the pilots can use to easily navigate, track progress, and ensure full coverage of the survey area greatly improving survey efficiency.

iGage: A Cost Effective Instrument for Measuring River Height and Snow Depth

The iGage is a low-cost, portable, rapidly deployable sonar instrument for providing river stage and snow depth information.  Developed by NOAA for remote field use in Alaska, the iGage is lightweight, durable, and compact, measuring just 5” x 7” x 3”.  The device is solar-powered so it requires no existing site power and can be boom-mounted to a variety of fixed platforms.

Smart Module for Communications Processing and Interface US Patent 9,297,925


Engineers at NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center have developed a patent-pending data collection and reporting system, the Smart Module for Communications Processing and Interface,  for use on data buoys or similar ocean- or land-based platforms where environmental data are being collected.  The benefit of the Smart Module design is that it may be readily retrofitted to a data buoy, weather station, or other similar applications, in order to add additional data acquisition capabilities or features, without disturbing existing communications and data logging equipment at the location.  This saves both time and money for testing and certifying new equipment at existing data gathering sites, some of which may be quite remote and difficult to access. By eliminating the risk of compromising an entire system by adding new components, the Smart Module makes adding new capabilities to existing platforms relatively simple and extremely cost effective.

Science On a Sphere® (SOS) is a room sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe.
