NOAA Big Data Project at Work

Today I Learned (TIL) with BigQuery blog site highlights the NOAA Big Data Project (BDP) at work.  This video shows the benefits of analyzing and visualizing large NOAA data sets.  In the video Google Software Engineer Reto Meier analyzes NOAA's Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) and Global Surface Summary of the Day (GSOD) data sets utilizing Tableau Software and Google Cloud Platform BigQuery.

NOAA generates a significant amount of data a day from satellites, radars, ships, weather models, and other sources. While this data is publicly available, it is historically difficult to download and work with in high volumes.  NOAA created the BDP to explore the potential benefits of working with industry partners to store data, foster innovation, and make NOAA data more readily accessible.  Through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), NOAA works with five infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) providers to broaden access to NOAA’s data resources.  You can learn more about NOAA's Big Data Project HERE
