In 2017, as Kian Mirshahi watched wildfires rage across his home state of California, he wondered if there might be a way to get real-time information to first responders and citizens to help coordinate actions on the ground. More specifically, he wondered if Artificial Intelligence, or AI, might provide a key to faster decision-making. Fortunately, NOAA had recently rolled out two major developments, which provided the fuel for Mirshahi’s innovative drive. 

In 2019, the TPO contracted a private company to research and assess the economic impact and overall effectiveness of NOAA's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) component of NOAA's Technology Transfer Program.  The attached document provides a high level summary of the results.

NOAA scientist, Dr. Peter Moeller, has partnered with Green Water Solutions, LLC to test a new technology for eliminating harmful algae blooms.

NOAA's Cooperative Research and Development Agreement or CRADA with Saildrone, Inc. is providing mountains of data across multiple NOAA mission areas.

Tampa Bay Times news team uses NOAA NEXRAD data provided through the Big Data Project for an in-depth analysis of Hurricane Irma.

 

Last summer, working with scientists and engineers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the boats skimmed along the edge of the retreating Arctic ice cap, giving scientists a detailed account of temperature, salinity and ecosystem information that would have been difficult and expensive to obtain in person.

On July 14, 2015, NOAA conducted a Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) north of Alaska on board the US Coast Guard Cutter Healy  This effort successfully integrated an Unmanned Aircraft Systemor UAS into a simulated response incident.  This exercise is one of many NOAA's UAS Program is conducting under Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) with US industry. 

The NOAA Ocean Service Hollings Laboratory Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), with Algaeventure Systems (dba Biosortia Pharmaceuticals), which was originally signed in 2012 and recently amended in 2014, has resulted in a wide array of successful outcomes for NOAA, and for its CRADA partners.  

The Milford laboratory seeks to transfer new knowledge and technology directly to the U.S. aquaculture industry through key partnerships and collaborations.  Most recently, the lab has signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Envera LLC of West Chester, PA, to evaluate a newly isolated probiotic strain for possible commercial use in oyster hatcheries.
