Profitable and Biosecure Rock Scallop Culture Created for the West Coast

Marine aquaculture of the native purple-hinge rock scallop, Crassadoma gigantean, faces challenges of limited geographic range and cross mating with wild relatives. California Sea Grant produced diploid and triploid rock scallop seed that can overcome these issues for growout trials.

Work is ongoing to increase the survival and quantity of seed production. The culture protocols developed are ready for use in commercial production and have been adopted at the Bodega Marine Laboratory and at the hatchery facility of Catalina Sea Ranch on Terminal Island in San Pedro, resulting in successful spawnings.
