DIY Sensors Allow Broad Monitoring of Sea Temperature for Coral Health

Opuhala Sea Temperature Sensor and Software

NOAA's Coral Health and Monitoring Program has developed a compact and inexpensive sea temperature sensor for the Opuhala project to measure sea temperature across multiple sites for this global project. Plans for these DIY sensors and relevant software is now available to the broader scientific community on the Opuhala Project Website.

What is the Opuhala Project all about? 
Opuhala was the ancient Hawaiian goddess of corals and spiny creatures. We have chosen this name to represent our project to study the influence of fluctuating sea temperatures on the growth and health of corals around the world, and also to compare the in situ data with satellite-measured data in an effort to improve satellite algorithms. Two to Three different types of corals (fringing, barrier, and atolls) will be monitored at 5m, 10m and 15m depth, where appropriate.
