Technology & Licensing Opportunities

The following technologies are available for both non-exclusive and exclusive licenses.  Companies that are interested in licensing a NOAA product may contact the NOAA Technology Partnerships Office via our office email at Please make sure to reference the specific technology in which you are interested in the text of your email.  Interested companies will be asked to complete a licensing questionnaire which will detail their suitability as a licensing partner and the specific marketing strategy for the technology.  Please note that requests for exclusive licenses will require license initiation fees and will require a public comment period of at least 30 days prior to implementation.

2015-16 Great Lakes Commission – Sea Grant Fellowship

The Great Lakes Commission-Sea Grant Fellow will work with members of the Great Lakes’ science, policy and information/education communities to advance the environmental quality and sustainable development goals of the Great Lakes states. In so doing, the Fellow will contribute to and benefit from research coordination and policy analysis activities. The Fellow will be located at the Great Lakes Commission offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This will be the 16th year this fellowship has been sponsored by the Great Lakes Commission, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Sea Grant College Program and the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network.

Multiple- Radar, Multiple Sensor System Now Operational

System Developed at the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory Transferred to the National Weather Service

The Multiple Radar Multiple Sensor (MRMS) system combines data streams from multiple radars, satellites, surface observations, upper air observations, lightning reports, rain gauges and numerical weather prediction models to produce a suite of decision-support products every two minutes. Because it provides better depictions of high-impact weather events such as heavy rain, snow, hail, tornadoes, and other threats, forecasters can quickly diagnose severe weather and issue more accurate and earlier forecasts and warnings.

Researchers at NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory designed the MRMS system to improve decision making within NOAA and other agencies – marking another NOAA research to operations success. Implementation of the system into NWS operations was funded in part by the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013

Technology and Collaboration: Monitoring Atlantic Cod

Northeast Fisheries Science Center Working to Monitor Spawning Activity in Massachusetts Bay

This latest deployment is one of several research efforts undertaken in a collaborative multi-year program to study the reproductive behavior of Atlantic cod in the wild.  For several years, researchers from the passive acoustics group at NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) have been working with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST), and local fishermen. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) joined the group in this latest study.

NOAA Researchers and Partners Document Rise in Great Lakes Water Levels

Levels expected to stay above-average through winter and spring of 2015

Scientists at the Army Corps of Engineers, Environment Canada, and NOAA recently documented a record-setting surge in water levels on Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron that began in January 2013, and has continued through November 2014. The United States and Canadian federal agencies expect water levels to stay near or above average on all of the Great Lakes over the next six months.
