Connecticut Sea Grant Assistance Contributes to Over 300% Growth in SE Connecticut Aquaculture Industry

In Connecticut, shellfishing generates $30 Million plus in farm-gate sales annually. Forty-four (44) licensed harvesters work the 70,000 acres of shellfish grounds under cultivation in Connecticut’s coastal waters. As other fishery opportunities dwindle or stagnate, more individuals are turning to shellfish farming as an option. In particular, since 2013, there has been an explosion of interest and growth in shellfish aquaculture in southeastern Connecticut.

Connecticut Sea Grant extension routinely provides business development services including business plan and grant writing, permitting assistance, information and technology transfer, gear research and training to existing and prospective members of Connecticut’s aquaculture industry. Prospective producers seek out Connecticut Sea Grant for one-on-one and group consultations to help them understand and better prepare for becoming shellfish farmers.

RESULTS: Prior to 2014, only three licensed harvesters were actively growing shellfish in southeastern Connecticut. In 2015, with business planning assistance from Connecticut Sea Grant and its regulatory partners, seven (7) prospective growers are now pursuing a career in aquaculture. Of those, four (4) have applied for permits and three (3) have developed or are in the process of developing business plans with the assistance of Connecticut Sea Grant. These new businesses have resulted in a significant gain in the total leased area for shellfish aquaculture in the state and in the number of cultivation permits issued.
