NOAA 2012 Technology Transfer and Patent Awards

On November 16, 2012, NOAA held its 2012 Administrator’s and Technology Transfer Award Ceremony at its headquarters in Silver Spring, MD. Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, gave the Keynote Address while the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, Dr. Robert Detrick, served as Master of Ceremonies.  Administrator Awards were given to individuals that demonstrated exceptional work in each of NOAA’s line offices. 

The Technology Partnerships Office presented Technology Transfer Awards to Michael Rust, Ken Masse, Thomas Wade, and Matthew Cook of The National Marine Fisheries Service for the development and transfer of sablefish hatchery technology to industry and establishment of sablefish as a new marine species for aquaculture in the U.S.

Kelly Goodwin and Christopher Sinigalliano from The Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research received a Technology Transfer Award for demonstrating exceptional leadership in developing and transferring microbial source tracking tools to identify coastal waters contamination sources and allowing city and county managers to devise mitigation strategies to restore water quality, decrease risks to human health, and preserve coastal economies. 

The Technology Partnerships Office also recognized NOAA Patent Holders.  From the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, James Churnside and James Jordan for detections of transient signals in Doppler spectra.  The invention relates to the art of signal processing.  In particular, a statistical technique to detect transient signals in power spectra, particularly for Doppler spectra used in radar and related applications.

From The National Weather Service’s Chung-Chu Teng, Richard Bouchard, and Rodney Riley for developing a system for monitoring, determining, and reporting directional spectra of ocean surface waves in near real-time from a moored buoy.

The event had been postponed due to Hurricane Sandy, having previously been schedule for October 30, 2012.
