SBIR Awardee, Hydronalix Receives the DOC Export Achievement Award

A small 37 pound robotic SONAR unmanned surface vehicle the Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard (EMILY), has become an invaluable tool for hurricane disaster response. What began as a joint robotics technology exploration project between NOAA and Hydronalix, transitioned to a NOAA Phase III development effort in Hurricane Tracking.

Since the first NOAA small USV project with Hydronalix, the company has grown from one employee to over 30 employees and has shipped over 400 systems world-wide. While it has been a long and difficult path for a small business in promoting the commercialization of small USV technology, the SBIR funding and expertise from federal government employees have been invaluable.

Last month, the journey took its next step as Eric Nielsen, Southwest Regional Director for the U.S. Commercial Service, presented Anthony “Tony” Mulligan, CEO/President of Hydronalix, with the Export Achievement Award. The Export Achievement Award was created in 2001 by the U.S. Commercial Service to recognize small and medium-sized businesses that have successfully started exporting or that have successfully expanded their sales into overseas markets. Joined by Ann Leila Kirkpatrick, U.S. Representative for Arizona’s 2nd congressional district, Hydronalix was proud to receive such a distinct honor. This award is proof that the NOAA SBIR Program is helping domestic small businesses reach new markets, increase sales, and create new jobs.
