Blue Ocean Gear Smart Buoy on the dock in a pile of fishing line

Blue Ocean Gear Smart Buoy

The Blue Ocean Gear Farallon Smart Buoy System allows commercial fishing fleets to monitor the location and movement of their deployed fishing gear — anytime, anywhere. Fishermen can navigate to precise coordinates instead of approximate waypoints even if weather, wind, or waves move the gear, saving hours of work and gallons of fuel every trip. Smart Buoys have been successfully deployed in North America’s most demanding fisheries, from Alaskan king crab to Atlantic longline and are compatible with most deployed gear including pots, longlines, gillnets, FADs, aquaculture, and ropeless gear. This compact, rugged, depth-rated buoy works by transmitting position and motion sensor data via the most encompassing satellite network in the world, so there are no black-out zones, no matter how far from shore or the vessel. No special equipment or training is needed to set up or deploy the system, and the gear turns on automatically when deployed. Data is compatible with multiple interfaces, each appropriate for different conditions. For quick checks, the Buoy Locator mobile app provides essential data to find your buoys or highlight unusual behavior. Customizable SMS alerts are also available to highlight activity. When onshore, the BlueVue web interface provides historical location, sensor data, and analytics. Offshore, integration with an onboard chart plotter is also available. Each user only sees their own Smart Buoys, though there is also the option to share buoy locations with other vessels to avoid gear conflict. The SBA SBIR/STTR Policy Directive dictates the justification that an agency can and must use to justify the sole-source award. Predictably, that justification reads that the new award must derive from, extend, or complete prior SBIR effort and be funded with non- SBIR funds.
